Associate Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead at a ranch in West Texas on Saturday.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) released a statement Saturday confirming Scalia's death, calling Scalia "a patriot" and an "unwavering defender of the written Constitution and the Rule of Law."

Scalia appeared to have died in his sleep of natural causes, according to reports.

Scalia had served on the Supreme Court since his 1986 appointment by President Ronald Reagan. At the time of his death, he had been the longest sitting current member of the Supreme Court.

Known for his clear, sometimes bombastic prose, he was a leading proponent of "originalism" -- the belief that the U.S. Constitution should be interpreted as the founders would have understood the document.

It is very rare that a sitting Supreme Court justice die will sitting on the bench. From 1955-2005, there was not a single justice who died while serving until Chief Justice William Rehnquist died in September 2005.
